Satsang - "The Story of You” (2016)

Co-Produced/Co-Arranged/Engineered

Harmony Vocals/Guitar/Keys/Bass/Strings

Roth’s first major work was when he initially joined the band Satsang and co-produced, co-arranged and engineered the band’s first production album “The Story of You.” Roth and his longtime best friend, Andrew McManus, tracked the entire album in a matter of days in McManus’s office at his home in Red Lodge, Montana. Armed with a single mic, multiple instruments and a collection of beautifully written songs by McManus, the two created what we know now as one of their most important works to date.

Satsang - "Pyramid(s)” (2017)

Co-Produced/Engineered/Mixed/Co-Mastered

Harmony Vocals/Guitar/Keys/Bass/Weissenborn

It was the sophomore release of “Pyramid(s)” from Satsang where Roth started to grow as an engineer, both in tracking and in mixing/mastering. Roth was given the opportunity to mix the entire album and eventually ended up co-mastering it with good friend and production mentor, Sam Ravenna. Along with adding his talents as a multi-instrumentalist, Roth began exploring his love of vocal arrangements on the song “Lay Me Down” and showcased his love of slide guitar with his first professional tracking of his Weissenborn on “Speak Up” & “Lay Me Down.” Roth was beautifully challenged and inspired by the many features on this album—from his engineering session with Grammy-award winning artist Chris Berry (tracking the musical genius in his home in New Mexico for the song “Be Me”) to bearing witness to the production talents of Mark Murphy from the band Wookiefoot on the song “Speak Up". This album made a huge impact on Roth as not just a musician, but as a producer/engineer. And his work paid off, as the album spent some time at #1 on the Billboard Reggae Music Charts.

Satsang - "Kulture” (2019)

Co-Produced/Co-Engineered/Mixed

Harmony Vocals/Bass/Pad/Synth/Weissenborn/Keys

Satsang’s third release “Kulture” was an auditory evolution of the band’s sound—both in McManus’s ability as a songwriter and Roth’s ability in the recording studio. Continuing their collaborative relationship, McManus provided a phenomenal collection of written songs, guitar tones and a solid vision that Roth again helped to translate and bring to life. Roth’s talents shine in songs like “Breathe,” with his complex background vocal arrangement, and in his cello/piano arrangement for the emotional “Intro (feat. Daniel Weiss).“ But it was in the mixing where Roth felt he had the most improvement to show. After many sessions with close friend and mixing engineer Corey Hess, Roth had grown more accustomed to the art of drum mixing, finally building on what he learned with “Pyramid(s)” and showing us a newfound confidence as a mixing engineer.

Satsang - "Free (feat. Justin Chittams)” (2018)

Produced/Mixed/Mastered/Arranged Beat

Harmony Vocals

In a hotel room in Valdez, Alaska, Andrew McManus proposed a simple question: “Got any beats, man?” Roth responded simply with: “Yea, I got something.” What came after would later be titled “Free.” Roth and McManus were joined that winter by songwriter/drummer extraordinaire Justin Chittams. The three were trapped inside, but it was for the best. Roth wrote and constructed this beat from scratch at his home in Minnesota and could’ve never imagined what McManus and Chittams would do to make it what it is. After vocals were recorded, Roth mixed and mastered “Free” for its release in 2018.

Satsang - "Forever and Ever, Amen” (2021)

Mixed/Mastered

Harmony Vocals/Bass/Weissenborn

It was when Andrew McManus decided to cover Randy Travis in honor of his mother that Satsang took on this timeless classic. McManus asked Roth to provide some harmonies, some Weissenborn Guitar, and his talents as a mixing/mastering engineer to bring this song to fruition. Joined on harmonies by McManus’s mother Tina, this song is a fun reimagining of a truly wonderful country song.

Satsang - "All. Right. Now.” (2021)

Co-Engineered/Bass/Backgroung Vocals by Karl Roth

All. Right. Now. was a turning point for the band “Satsang”. During the height of the pandemic, Andrew McManus decided to fly out the band and travel to Paradise Valley, Montana to record the album “All. Right. Now.”. Armed with a plethora of recording equipment, Karl drove to Montana and oversaw the engineering for the drumming that would make it onto the album. He also recorded his bass and backup vocals to add his familiar aesthetic that Karl has lent the band since his joining nearly 8 years ago.

Satsang - "Flowers From the Fray” (2022)

Mixed/Backup Vocals by Karl Roth

During the winter of 2022, Andrew McManus and fellow bandmate/close friend Parker brown went into a cabin in the woods of Montana and tracked an entire album that would later be titled “Flowers From the Fray”. The album was a collection of songs showcasing the evolution and personal vulnerability of songwriter Andrew McManus. Parker Brown made a huge impression with his skills as a producer, engineering and performing nearly every instrument you hear on the record. Upon completing the recording process, McManus reached out to Karl to mix this beautiful record and lend his voice to each song. The final product ended up being a true masterpiece - a simple yet stylistic record of heartfelt writing and performance.

Chris Wilusz - "Perspective” EP (2019)

Produced/Mixed/Mastered/Arranged

Vocals/Keys/Bass/Lap Steel/Programming

Chris Wilusz reached out to Roth through a friend after hearing his work with Satsang. He brought well thought-out melodies and a deep, rich vocal tone that caught Roth’s attention. After some time, the two decided to work together and the “Perspective” EP was born. Chris wrote each song, and Roth added his studio experience to help arrange these songs and bring Chris’s writing to life. Roth would end up producing the full EP from start to finish, mixing and mastering it, while adding his touch in almost every stage of the process.

Chris Wilusz - "Older, Wiser” (2020)

Produced/Mixed/Mastered/Arranged

Vocals/Keys/Bass/Lap Steel/Programming

As part of their initial EP sessions, “Older, Wiser” was the sixth song that didn’t end up making it on the “Perspective” EP. But Chris was saving the single for a future release, which ended up coming in early 2020.

Chris Wilusz - "World’s On Fire” (2021)

Produced/Mixed/Mastered/Arranged

Vocals/Lap Steel/Bass/Banjo/Keys

It was amidst the Covid-19 pandemic when Chris reconnected with Karl to discuss plans to work on his first full length album. With new experiences and perspectives gained, Chris had built a body of work that was ready to be recorded and shared with the world. The two would meet again as 2021 began, when Chris traveled to record with Karl in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After a short stint recording Chris’s vocals and guitar, Karl would go on to arrange the accompanying parts that filled out Chris’s evolution as a songwriter. Karl would also Mix & Master this project until it’s end, and “World’s on Fire” was born. Karl attempted to evolve with Chris and perform/write parts for Banjo and Lap Steel, along with create a very distinct sonic landscape to support Chris’s folk influenced style.

Graham Good and The Painters - "Self-Titled” (2021)

Mixed/Mastered

Harmony Vocals/Lap Steel

Graham Good and Roth met in Denver at the Larimer Lounge before a Satsang show where Graham was performing in the opening band. Graham would later reach out to Roth seeing if he would like to mix and master Graham Good and The Painters’ first full length album, and Roth jumped at the chance. Roth was blown away by the band’s talent and Graham’s songwriting, He was also challenged by the complex task of mixing a large dynamic band with a full horn section. After almost a year of work, the band and Roth found the project coming to an end, and celebrated it with the first single “Slumber” being released on Jan. 1, 2021. The rest of the album is an intricate web of melody and harmony that both showcases Good’s profound writing, with the immense talent of each individual band member throughout.

Graham Good - “Break Free” (2021)

Mixed/Mastered/Harmony Vocals/Lead Guitar

Graham Good had decided to record a full length solo album during the midst of the COVID pandemic, and reached out to Karl to produce/engineer and lend his talents to the project. Graham and fellow friend/bandmate Joey LeClerc flew out to Minneapolis to track with Karl during the freezing February weather, and over a weekend, magic was made. “Break Free” is one of many singles to come from that project, as songs are slowly being gifted to the public. Karl got to showcase his abilities on electric guitar throughout the album, as well as continue to develop his production skills in the studio.

Keep an eye out for the new Graham Good solo album “One Foot Out the Door”, coming soon!

After tracking the songs at Echo Mountain Recording in Asheville, NC, Evan reached out to Karl to mix & master some of their new material. After all was said and done, Karl mixed/mastered and even lent some vocal harmonies/production elements to 8 of the 11 songs on the album. The songs -

“Signed, a Vine” - “I Am Your Friend” - “Night Glow” - “Little Butterfly” - “Komorebi” - “Best and Worst” - “Pictures of My Life” - “One of the Joys”

all show Karl’s evolving talent behind the mix desk, as well as the continuing evolution of songwriter Evan Button.

Lua Flora - “I Am Your Friend”

Vocal Harmony/Weissenborn/Mixed/Mastered

Lua Flora is a folk/world music/reggae band based in North Carolina, and is led by the songwriter Evan Button. “I Am Your Friend” was in need of a mix and master, so Lua Flora reached out again to Karl to lend his talents. Building on the relationship they had built with their collaboration on “Little Butterfly”, Karl went on to add some vocal harmonies, as well as some Weissenborn (acoustic lap steel guitar) to the track to round out the second solo section. After that, the song was mixed and mastered, and shortly thereafter was released for all to hear!

Lua Flora - “Komorebi”

Vocal Harmony/Mixed/Mastered

Lua Flora is a folk/world music/reggae band based in North Carolina, and is led by the songwriter Evan Button. “Komorebi” is an esoteric masterpiece, speaking to the spirituality found in being with nature. Upon writing this song, Evan of Lua Flora connected with Karl to mix and master this song. Karl lended his vocal harmonies, as well as fine tuning the beautiful arrangement Lua Flora had tracked. The interplay between the vibraphone and mandolin truly make this song unique and a joy to listen to.

Lua Flora - “Little Butterfly”

Vocal Choir/Mixed/Mastered

Lua Flora is a folk/world music/reggae band based in North Carolina, and is led by the songwriter Evan Button. Evan and Karl met when Lua Flora opened up for Satsang years ago in Asheville, North Carolina. After reconnecting in Arizona at Arizona Roots Festival, Evan would reach out a year or so later in hopes of having Karl mix and master an upcoming single from the band. Karl would jump at the chance to sonically showcase the inherent talent and creativity of the band, and the beautiful songwriting that Evan had shown. “Little Butterfly” is a unique, well-crafted mix of folk and reggae — a striking balance of the two genres that carries you through an experience Evan had while diving deep into the works of Alan Watts. Karl succeeded in shining a light on that balance, and add some of his own talents — providing a vocal background that subtly builds until the full choral unveiling at the end of the song. Karl would also focus his talents on a clean, dynamic mix that clearly balances the performances given by Evan, Sean, Hinton and Austin. From the clean mandolin and charango lines, to the beautiful violin arrangement provided by Richard Vagner, “Little Butterfly” stands to be some of both Karl’s and Lua Flora’s best work to date.

And it certainly won’t be the last collaboration. Keep your eyes out for some upcoming new works from this team!
